Document Summary

There will be three sections in the exam. In part a, students must define and give two examples each of three terms for literary analysis. There will be five terms from which to choose. Part a will be worth 30% of the exam mark, so each term defined, exemplified and commented on will be worth 10% of the exam mark. The five terms you will choose three from in part a on the exam will be drawn from the following list: allegory: a narrative with both literal [usually fairly obvious] meaning and secondary, often symbolic meaning or meanings. Allegory may present one set of characters or entities or events in the guise of another, creating implied parallels for the purposes of satire or political comment. A character may be established in a short story through descriptive commentary by the narrator, or may be developed less directly for example, through his or her words, actions, thoughts, and interactions with other characters.
