This happens due to the influx and efflux of ions (mainly sodium and potassium). The generation of an action potential is as follows: a stimulus is received and sodium channels open. If there is sufficient sodium entering the potential of the inside of the cell may move from -70mv to -55mv (threshold). This causes more sodium to enter the cell until the potential reaches about 30 mv.
