Found in pu ng of drosophila busckii salivary gland polytene chromosome when temp was raised. Pu ng = genes being actively transcribed since they were induced by heat. Heat shock exposure only under heat shock conditions function at all time during other high stress responses and found in other organisms. The dna replicates but do not separate; remain attached at the centromere (this is visible under a microscope!) The response is mediated by an alternative sigma factor (sigma 32/sigmah) that acts on rpoh which codes the rna polymerase gene. The sigma32 controls a regulon aka a bunch of genes all under the same regulatory mechanism but under separate promoters. This means the regulon will bind to like 50 di erent promoters but all the genes will still be turned on/o based on the presence/absence of sigma32. A basal amount is present during non-heat shock conditions.
