Psyc 210: unit 2 - physiology; the new psychology; structuralism. Kinnebrook incident - fired for slow reaction time for astronomy recordings (off by about second). Friedrich willhelm bessel - german astronomer interested in errors of measurement- belived them to be attributable to individual differences over which people have no control. Thus the difference in observation times would be found among all astronomers; called the personal equation. Astronomers would have to take into account the nature of the human observer (perceptions influence reported observations); human observation would have to be considered in all areas of science that relied on this. This led to the study of the human sense organs & investigation of psychological processes in sensing & perceiving. Late 19th century: phyisology became a discipline (1830"s) due to johannes m ller- advocated use of the experimental method. Handbook of the physiology of mankind - summarized all physiological reaserch of the period & systematized knowledge.
