Iq zoo: keller & marian breland made a career out of training animals using behavioral techniques. There were 3 stages in the development of behaviorism: watson"s behaviorism: by 1924 behaviorism had taken over american psychology, neobehaviorism: 1930-1960, includes tolman, hull and skinner. Return to consideration of cognitive processes whil focusing on the observation of overt behavior. Operationism: the doctrine that a physical concept can be defined in precise terms related to the set of operations or procedures by which it is determined. Wanted to rid science of pseudoproblems - those that are not observable or physically demonstrable. Proposed by bridgman - physicist who said that concepts need physical referents. Questions of the soul, etc can"t be observed in lab - discard concept. So consciousness is also a pseudoproblem in psychology. Formal statement of the principles already being used by psychologists. Edward chace tolman (1886-1959) harvard graduate; studied with gestalt pyschologist in germany.
