Woodie gurthie and dave van ronk had huge influences on him his first song was influenced by them (folk song) The times - transitional period between 1950s and what became known as the 60"s. While the traditional purpose of folk songs is to provide narratives, dylan changed them to be topical. 2 primary streams of music folk & lit. Dylan moved from folk to beat while incorporating important elements of folk music and this caused controversy. His writing moved from the traditional folk narrative into the surreal.
