Human physiology: the scientific study of the functions of our body. A teleological approach explains body functions in terms of meeting a bodily need, without understanding how this outcome is accomplished. Mechanistic approach view body as a machine whose mechanisms of action can be explained in terms of cause and effect sequences of physical/chemical processes. Physiological mechanisms are made possible by the structural design and relationships of various body parts that carry out each of these functions. Respiratory airways that carry out air from outside into the lungs branch extensively hen they reach lungs. Blood vessels carrying blood into lungs branch extensively and from dense networks of small vessels that encircle each of the air sacs. The greater the available surface area for exchange, the faster the rate of movement of oxygen and co2 between air and blood. Most common atoms in the body are oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen and make up 99% of body chemistry.
