Development occurs from before birth until late adolescence (around 25) Psychopathology- damage or dysfunction to the mind. Almost always parent/parent substitute is seeking the service. Is the patient interested in the therapeutic setting for diagnoses or intervention: focus on development progress. Goal is to get the person back on track before they started feeling down but not for kids because that puts them behind. Ids need to be on the development trajectory that they are on. They grow in many different ways (vocabs, strength) Need to be put ahead of where they were before they get back on track: parents knowledge of norms. They don"t have a good understanding of what to expect. Often assumes its abnormal when things are typical and vice versa. Getting them back to what we were doing. Developments varies in each individual at a rate. Cicchetti & toth: ancestor fields of developmental psychopathology.
