Alpha and beta tubulin monomers dimerize to from dimers; organize interior of cell. Polymerizing of alpha + beta monomers into long polymers. Microtubules involved anywhere besides the flagella or cilia. Microtubule organizing center found in interphase; indirectly facilitates microtubule formation using proteins around the centrioles. Do not know function; do not polymerize or depolymerize. Note: singlets growing from the centrosome do not touch the centrioles. Forms gamma tubulin ring complexes (yturc) near the centriole; helps at the minus end and grows away from the centriole. Note: does not change critical concentration (cc), just how fast polymerization occurs. Provides for lateral cohesion = smooth + end. Lateral cohesion stronger when beta monomer is bound to gtp; end loses gtp cap when hydrolyzed to gdp frays, disassembles, depolymerizes. Can alter microtubule stability; packages bundle microtubules up; Keeps microtubules from growing; helps stabilize the + end. Type of +tip; helps stabilize the + end.
