Lecture 0: intro to population ecology and its practical. Ecology defined: scientific study of mechanisms that influence distribution and abundance of organisms. Prediction experiment data collect compare data to predictions predictions = born-out or not born-out. What a population is: group of organisms of the same species occupying the same location at the same time, depends on scale of the question, hard to delineate. Bio3440 lecture notes: define two populations (1) focus of research question and (2) subsample. How population ecology integrates different spatial scales and many disciplines. Interactions at one level influence the next: molecules individuals populations species communities, lots known less known, our main concern = populations, work backwards from populations to individuals. Abundance vs. distribution: distribution is all about where is the organism located, can help with assessing status of populations, range contraction = decline in populations, area-sensitive.
