Doppler shift when an object is coming toward you it makes a sound, sound waves are compressed differently than when they are moving away. If a light source is moving toward you, it appears shortened blue-shifted. If a light source is moving away, it appears lengthened red-shifted. Stars are moving away from earth: characteristics of cosmic microwave background radiation.
