Some people argue popular culture is dangerous makes us violent, cuts us off from people. Some people argue that it destroys groups of experts, its available to everyone, it allows us to see things differently, slows things down, excites us, forms us into communities, brings people together, model religion. Linked to efficiency, speed of distribution, getting faster and faster. Perhaps if something is broadcasted it brings us together for 15 min watching it but then we spread apart. Walter benjamin the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction (1936: wrote powerful defense of popular culture. Friend was against pop culture, admired high culture. Civilization: certain hygiene, laws, culture has to do with art. Culture exists when humans symbolically represent themselves to themselves. Even in the simplest and earliest of cultures they make representation of human beings (human made of clay, wood etc only species that do this)
