Lecture 1 introduction to film studies - september 13th 2016. What are films: complex systems, contain stylistic elements, a story, carefully constructed to covey ideas, position people. Question: how does a film make us laugh, cry, etc. The hardest films to analyze are the ones we think we know best/ the obvious. Every detail about a film is a decision made by producers, post production, artists, etc. Dust bowl -the great depression in the u. s. , people were forced to migrate to california, Florida, big cities (woz: the original was not set in the dust bowl - this was the directors choice, casting is also the director"s choice - different cast can change the entire film. Film form - the way parts work together to create an overall effect: directors and screen writers = make choices about form, viewers = respond to form at every moment.
