Beyond the Light Switch 10/16/2012 12:17:00 PM Video Notes  Two thirds of the plant does not have electricity  US energy supplies: 50% coal 20% natural gas 20% nuclear, other includes wind, uranium  Coal is the number one reason for climate change o Without figuring out a way to reduce CO2 emissions from coal, the future for coal in non-existent  Goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 Coal  Closing coal plants can cost many people their jobs  The goal is to reduce carbon emissions  Carbon capture and storage o Captures only 1.5% of the carbon that is actually emitted o Already very costly and expensive  Phase 1 (capture less than 2%) is over $100 million  Phase 2 (capture between 2 an 17%) cost over $600 million o CCS unit will use 1/3 of a plant’s energy to operate  Would have to burn more coal to compensate  Looking at storing CO2 underground o Millions of tons of liquid CO2 has already been injected
