Portugal was one of the richest states -> too small to be a great power. Spanish population are xenophobic-> don"t like foreigners, very religious. Spanish unlucky with kings after philip 2nd -> bad kings. 17th century sucked for brit: civil wars, division, 3 naval wars against dutch-> dutch win. No clear consensus in politics or religion (factions and parties) Three empires in trouble: polish republic, ottoman empire, holy roman empire. >serf line (serf belongs to land; landlord owns land/ppl, serfs cannot move) Polish: liebrum veto-> every vote was a free vote (1652) Poorest state in europe but emerging as a great power. Increasing subordination of already servile classes,always mixed, often different. Marxist model, often assumed is simply entirely insufficient. Aristocracy -> middle class -> working class (this is wrong) Property: includes people, yourself, what you do, livestock, inherited rights (right to collect taxes) Estate: legal realities (ex: nobilities includes all the nobles who bought their rank and poor nobles)
