Lords required the loyal services of vassals, who were rewarded with fiefs of their own. Ended in 1333 with the destruction of the shogunate and the short reestablishment of imperial rule under emoerir go-daigo. The term bakufu originally meant the dwelling and household of a shogun. It came to be generally used fro the system of government of a feudal military dictatorship, exercised in the name of the shogun. This is the meaning that has been adopted into english through the term shogunate. The shogun system was originally established under the kamakura shogunate by minamoto no yoritomo.
