Document Summary

Athletes trained in the gymnasion and the palaistra, which could be found in every city- state they were usually both called gymnasion. The ideal palaistra has a large central courtyard, open to the sky and surrounded by roofed colonnades this area would have the skammas. Three of the sides had a single colonnade, and the north had a double to protect from storms and the sun. Behind the single colonnades were bays for seating where classes would be held these buildings were used to train the mind as well as the body. In the middle of the north side of the courtyard, there is a bigger bay with extra seats called the ephebeion, where young men train to become citizens and receive lessons about their heritage and traditions of their homeland. To the right of this is the punching-bad room, dust/powder room, and bath.
