Spanish American Cuban Philippine War:
Cubans were revolting against the Spanish and wanted help from Americans because of the Monroe
doctrine
(Americans said that no country will take over another country on American’s watch and they will step in
if it does happen). Butcher Weyler was sent from Spain to set up concentration camps in 1895 and 10s
of thousands were put in camps
o President McKinley refused to engage in war but USS Maine was sent to Havana to spy
on Spanish and Cubans ship exploded and blame fell to Spanish bc there were mines
in the boat
o US got involved in 1898 and were fighting for Cuban independence. US wasn’t ready
to fight for Cuba but wanted to do something good. US put up a bloackade around Cuba
so Spanish couldn’t send more men to fight
o Peace treaty signed and USA was given Cuba, Philippians, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii
imperial power. But Philippines didn’t want to be under American control so they went
to fight for independence and war lasted for 5 years. Debate over imperialism because
US didn’t want to be like Britain
WWI
- Americans stayed neutral at first because Wilson wants U.S. to stay out of war bc it didn’t
touch their land or their safety
o Lots of immigrants so hard to choose a side
o Wars are really expensive
- Wants to stay out of the war put then make the peace treaty
- The Zimmerman telegram, February 1917 sent to the Mexican govt
o Said that if the Mexicans invade America, Germany will help after the war
o Was a distraction
o British figured out the code used and gave it to the Mexicans, making pressure on
Wilson higher
o The germans went after any vessel and on april 6th 1917, Wilson asked congress to
declare war on Germany
o Americans were healthy compared to the germans who had been fighting for a while
WWII
- Road to war started with Asia
- In 1937 with Japanese expansionism, WWII breaks out in Asia and US declared to protect
Chinese Independence and sovereignty through the open door notes
o U.S. having depression so they send $$ in economic aid to help China build up their
own military and pay soldiers
o Sent advisors
- Road to war in Europe
- Roosevelt forced into Neutrality Acts, 1935-57, but not neutral
o Done out of necessity bc of depression, U.S. not ready or military able to go to war in
1939
o Cannot sell arms to any country, cannot loan money to any country and no amerians
on belligerent ship
o Not prepared for war but wanted to fight
- Lend Lease Act was a defense mechanism necessary to keep the U.S. out of war
