History of sexuality began in the 1960"s and 1970"s: gay rights movement also going on during this time helped the emergence. Many marginalized groups felt that studying their own history would explain how they became marginalized: this is where the study of sexual history came from. First person created about theorizing sex and sexual history was michel foucault: french philosopher who theorized about the history of sex and sexuality. Wrote a book called the history of sexuality . Argued that modern sexuality was shaped by ideas of the victorian period (late 19th century) 19th century was obsessed with all things sex and sexual. The repression of sex during the victorian era actually made them obsessed about sex. Greatest contribution to the history of sex and sexuality was saying that sex was not natural but made up of various different bodies of knowledge on the topic. Sex and sexuality was very dictated by what these agents said about it.
