Psychological consequences of treatment such as exercise and using treatment such as exercise to change other health behaviours. Distribution- frequency and patterns of disease occurrence in a population. Frequency- prevalence or how often the disease occurs. Incidence/occurrence- rate of new disease or health events. Ex: observing how drinking effects a population after the fact. Analytical: test specific hypotheses regarding casual links between various exposures and mortality incidence outcomes using purely observational methods. Ex: cohort, case control: analytical cohort studies: A group of individuals are identified and watched to see what events befall them based on the topic of choice, disease rates expressed in person years . Ex: what happens to smokers? (lung cancer, compare smokers and non-smokers) Participants: 17,000 male harvard alumni aged 35-74. Baseline: participants completed questions about their daily physical activities. Questions about exercise activities lead to categorizing the participants into 6 levels of physical activity energy expenditure of kcal/week. Follow up assessment of 6-10 years later.
