It is not clear, atleast to me, who is on offense and who is on defense; consider the catcher, who may actually controls the game. The catcher is the only defensive player in any sport i know of whose position required him to adopt the perspective, it not the stance of the player on offense. Part of what a batter must overcome, part of the secretive, ruthless dimension of baseball, is the knowledge that an opposing player, couching right behind him, signals wordlessly in order to exploit his weaknesses. Defense could have some natural leg up on offense; both can be difficult to coordinate. It is less risky to be initiative for the offense than the defense.
