Alexander cartwright: talked about as the father of modern baseball: set rules of 9 players/team and 20ft between bases, carried baseball to the pacific coast and later to hawaii. Baseball looked up as a national pastime of us: concept of striking a ball with a bat, running between bases, scoring, etc. found even with puritan children, but no rules were written down; no documents from puritans. Other games needed rules set in place as well in order to have competition between groups from different geographical areas and different towns. Rules attached to competition between entities: rules and competition are now factors in the rise of modern sport from a premodern circumstance to modern, rise of organization is a third factor, organization into leagues, conferences, associations, etc.
