Document Summary

Sport psychology midterm review: arousal, stress and anxiety. Arousal of mind and body in response to demands made on them (schafer, 1996: one of most misunderstood concepts in sport psychology, inaccurately viewed as undesirable, unhealthy, negative, to be avoided at all costs. Positive or negative: difference between demands placed on person and their perceived ability to cope. Stressor: any demand on mind or body. Negative stress: when athlete perceives stressor as unmanageable, then stressor is more threatening and produces high anxiety: e. g. crowd cheers become distraction or they are perceived as negative = athlete becomes anxious. When athlete perceives stressor as predictable and manageable, then less threatening and produces less anxiety. Positive stress can provide: energy, enjoyment, attentiveness to meet challenges, enter new situations, achieve max performance. Stress is a form of positive energy: produces growth and achievement. Growth takes place in response to stress: require proper stress/recovery balance. Physical stress: run, jump, weights: recovery: eat, drink, sleep, relaxation.
