Envision a world which has people categorized and placed methodically into different hierarchical groups, based on the eye colour they are born with, weight or jawline structure. With what qualities people are born, and the family they are born into, is beyond the control of any human being. It is therefore ridiculous and unjust to deem an individual less or more important based on a component that is past anybody"s control. The troubling reality of today"s world is that many barriers have to be faced by minority groups, such as the blacks and women, that make it very challenging for these groups to reach a desired goal. Affirmative action is a valuable device instrumented to assist members of these minority groups. It is the practice of promoting and/or employing a member from the minority group, purely on the basis of their race or gender, to promote equality and as a way of compensating for past wrong-doings.
