Description
Cardio Functions of the cardio system: 1) Transport oxygen and nutrients to tissues of the body 2) Remove carbon dioxide and waste products from the tissues 3) Regulate body temp and pH (acidity of the blood) 4) Transports and distributes hormones and other substances thru the body - The cardio system is a transport system Role as a Transport System: - Central pump (the heart) - Closed system of blood vessels - Fluid medium (blood) Cardio system is composed of 2 circulatory systems 1) Pulmonary 2) Systemic Pulmonary Circulation: - provide exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between atmosphere and blood - right ventricle-pulmonary artery-pulmonary capillaries-venules-pulmonary vein- left atrium-left ventricle - Detailed events of pulmonary circulation: 1) RV contracts, ejects venous blood to pulmonary artery (blood low O2 high CO2) 2) Pulmonary artery branches into smaller vessels to become pulmonary capillaries 3) In capillaries blood picks up O2 and removes some CO2 4) Capillaries drain into venules then into pulmonary vein 5) Pulmonary vein carries O2 blood back to left atrium
