NERVOUS SYSTEM OVERVIEW LECTURE !
"
As brain size decreases, there are less folds "
"
Divisions of the Nervous System!
"
1. Central nervous system (CNS)—> parts of nervous system encased in bone!
-brain "
-spinal cord"
"
2. Peripheral nervous system (PNS)—> everything else !
Peripherphal can be further divided into "
—> Somatic System (Voluntary system) = spinal nerves, dorsal root ganglia "
—> Visceral System (Autonomic Nervous System)(Involuntary)= pupil constriction,
blood pressure, crying, salivation, sweating, GI peristalsis.!
Further divided into:"
- Parasympathetic- rest and digest!
- Sympathetic- fight or flight !
"
"
Views of the Brain !
"
a) Dorsal! ! b) Ventral ! ! c)Lateral ! !d) Medial! ! !
- from top - from bottom - side view " " - cut brain in half!
!
! ! ! !
Important Terminology !
Anterior/ Rostral- ahead or front!
Posterior/Caudal- behind or twds back !
Dorsal- back !
Ventral- front or belly!
Midline- central axis!
Medial- twds middle or midline!
Lateral- twds side!
Ipsilateral- same side!
Contralateral- opposite side !

Only pages 1-3 are available for preview. Some parts have been intentionally blurred.

2
"
Planes through the brain!
a) Midsagital!!!b) Horizonal!!! c)Coronal !
- cut down midline" - cut horizontally through brain - cut top down from ear to ear !
!
"
Major Parts of the Central Nervous System !
1) Cerebrum/ Cerebral Cortex- two cerebral hemispheres divided by the saggital
fissure(midline)!
2) Cerebellum- also has two hemispheres concerned with ipsilateral motor control (right side
controls left side of the moody movements etc.)!
3) Brain Stem- most primitive part of the brain, concerned with respiration, body temperature "
4) Spinal Cord- conduit (conveyor) for info to and from the brain"
"
Major Brain Divisions and Structures !
Spinal Cord- has 31 segments, each segment with a pair of spinal nerves ( one left, one right)!
Each spinal nerve consists of:!
1) Dorsal root (sensory)"
2) Ventral root (motor)"
The spinal cord has five regions, with different numbers of spinal segments:!
a) Cervical - 8"
b) Thoraic - 12"
c) Lumbar - 5"
d) Sacral - 5"
e) Coccygeal - 1 "
Mouse !!!!!Human

Only pages 1-3 are available for preview. Some parts have been intentionally blurred.

3
"
Forebrain (Prosencephalon)!
—> Telencephalon"
"- Cereblal Cortex "
—>Diencephalon"
"- Thalamus"
"- Retina "
"
Midbrain (Mesencephalon)"
—> Tectum- Superior and Inferior Colliculus"
—> Tegmentum"
"
Hindbrain (Rhombencephalon) "
—> Metencephalon"
—> Myelencephalon !
"
"
"
"
"
Gray Matter- where neurons are!
White matter- where axons are—> it is white matter
because the myelin sheath that surrounds parts of the
axon is white. "
