Document Summary
Transduction: translating your sensory information into nerve impulses. Sensation stimuli activate sensory receptors transduction: sensory receptors translate information into nerve impulses feature detectors analyze stimulus features stimulus features are reconstructed reconstructions compared to memory recognition and interpretation occurs perception. Sensation: sense organs respond/translate stimuli into nerve impulses are sent to brain. Nerve impulses are the only known language in the nervous system. Concerned with 2 types of sensitivity & studies relations of physical characteristics of stimuli and sensory capabilities: absolute limits of sensitivity. Dimmest light we can see an object in; softest sound we can hear: recognizing differences between stimuli. Smallest detectable difference in brightness; recognize difference in tones. Absolute threshold: the lowest intensity that a stimulus can be detected 50% of the time. Environments contain a background level of stimulation for each sense and this level (adaption level) must be overcome if a stimulus is to be detected. Absolute thresholds vary from each person and applies to each sense.
