Document Summary

Motivation - a process that influences the direction, persistence and vigor of goal-directed behavior. Instinct - an inherited predisposition to behave in a specific and predictable way when exposed to a particular stimulus. Faded because of little evidence and circular reasoning. Examine hereditary contributions to motivation by looking at how much specific behaviors are hereditary. Adaptive significance of behavior is a key to understand motivation. Homeostasis - a state of internal physiological equilibrium that the body strives to maintain. Sensory mechanism - detecting changes in the internal environment. Control center - receives information from the sensors and activates the response system (respond to the set point) Drive theory (clark hull) - disruptions to homeostasis produce drives that motivate the organism to restore the balance (hunger, thirst) Proposed that reducing drives is the ultimate goal of motivated behavior. Problem with the theory - people often do things that increase arousal like diet or watch horror movies.
