Some individual differences cause problems in people"s lives. Over 50 million people suffer from light-moderate depression. Most prescribed drugs in america are those that treat anxiety. Part 1: what is a psychological disorder: abnormal thoughts feelings and behavior (abnormal psychology, what does abnormal mean, deviation from average (or normal) unusually happy people, or successful ones. Deviance is an important criterion for defining psychological disorders: dysfunctional (maladaptive). The thoughts feelings and behaviors that interfere with a person"s ability to interact or adapt to their everyday lives: causes personal distress (i"m suffering and i don"t like the way i"m feeling) The three d"s: deviant, dysfunctional, and distressing: problems with definition, definitions of normal and abnormal are influenced by cultural norms and values (e. g. hearing voices, and seeing visions could be normal. They wouldn"t be deviant, distressing, or dysfunctional: they can change over time within a culture (e. g. homosexuality pre & post 1973).
