Document Summary
Psychology is the science that studies behavior and the physiological and mental processes that underlie it. Behavior is any overt (observable) response or activity by an organism. Psychologists study animals because they have more control over the environment. Mental processes are difficult to study because they are private. Clinical psychology- concerned with diagnosis and treatment of psychological problems and disorders (emerged after wwii) Adjustment is the psychological processes through which people manage or cope with demands and challenges of everyday life. Empiricism is the premise that knowledge should be acquired through observation. Experimental research- experimenters manipulate one variable under controlled conditions and observe changes that occur in a second variable. Independent variable is manipulated, however critics claim cannot be completely controlled. Control group does not receive any special treatment. Correlational research- when two variables are related to each other. Broadens the scope of phenomena that psychologists can study. Correlation coefficient is the degree that relationship exists.
