Two types of statistics descriptive- organizes, summarizes, and communicates observations inferential- indicate how confident we can be; determines if it is a chance, or a meaningful difference. Hypothesis testing is the process of drawing conclusions on whether a relationship between variables is supported by evidence research/ observations. Can either support or not support the theory; cannot prove results. Theory may be revised or partially supported. Characteristics of good theories: incorporate existing facts and observations supported by new research ndings, good theories generate testable hypotheses aka must be falsi able, theories are supported, not proven, good theories are parsimonious (simple) Reliability and validity: test retest reliability- same individual taking the same test = test is reliable (consistent, validity- the extent to which it measures what it claims to measure.
