Role of OT in Emergency Department
▪ The role of Occupational Therapy in the ED is to provide functional assessment
of patients and to assist /collaborate with the ED team to make decisions
regarding a safe and timely discharge or the need for inpatient admission
OT Services Provided in the ED
• OT assessment is formal and not hectic (one to one assessment)
• Assessment of cognitive and functional status
• Equipment recommendations
• Assessment of splinting for joint protection and/or preserve function and ROM
• Recommendations for community supports
• Recommendations for alternative living environment
• Recommendations for skin integrity programs
• Vestibular Screening/Treatment (VH)
Who would benefit from OT in the ED?
➢ A change in status due to an acute or chronic condition
