Document Summary

Aboriginal people believe that if a koala"s dead body isn"t treated properly, its spirit can cause rivers to dry and people will die of thirst. A myth from south-eastern australia tells how this myth was originated. Long time ago there was an orphan koala-boy named koobor who was mistreated and neglected by his relatives. As a result he had to learn to live on the leaves of the gum tree but wasn"t given enough water to calm his thirst. One day when his relatives went to get food, they forgot to hide their water buckets so for the first time koobor had enough water to drink. That evening koobor"s relatives came back from haunting tired and thirsty, and once they realized their buckets of water were hung to the tallest tree next to koobor they became angry. They demanded koobor to return to stolen buckets but he refused.
