Canada"s immigration policy defines family as spouses and close blood relatives. Comprised of a married or common-law couple with or without children, or a lone parent living with at least one child in the same dwelling. Married or common-law couple families must have at least one child under 24 who lives in the home. Includes children from a current or previous union but excludes children who do not live with the parens at the time of the census. The u. n. "s definition of family is based on its performance involving socio-economic functions (i. e. emotional and financial support to its members, personal development, and the transmission of cultural values) The vanier institute of family uses this definition. Alberta passing the adult interdependent relationship act which redefines relationship to allow it to fall outside of marriage and recognizes benefits and responsibilities that come w/ these relationships.
