Canada"s suicide rate place 14th among 105 countries that publish their rates. French sociologist emile durkheim, one of the pioneers of discipline, demonstrated that suicide is more than just an individual act of desperation resulting from psychological disorder, as was commonly believed at the time. He discovered that there were slightly more women than men in insane asylums. Yet there were 4 male suicides for every female suicide. Women are generally more involved in the intimate social relations of the family. In canada suicide among people between the ages of 10 and 64 is much more common having increased substantially since the 1960"s.
