> Reasons for suicide: mental health issues, financial stress, feelings of being an outsider
> Durkheim connected suicide to social solidarity social ties

SOCIOLOGICAL EXPLAINATION OF SUICIDE
Emile Durkheim: At the end of the 19th century, demonstrated suicide rates were strongly influenced by
social forces.
Examined association between rates of suicide and rates of psychological disorder for different
groups.
Found suicide rates and rates of psychological disorder did not vary directly, and often appeared
to vary inversely.
His research did not show high to high
DURKHEIM’S CONTRIBUTION
Durkheim argued suicide rates varied as a result of differences in the degree of social solidarity in
different categories of the population.

Structuralist: I am society, each part has a purpose resulting in equilibrium. If everything work fine then I
work fine. If one part is affected, it affects the whole system.
Structuralists view society as a working machine.
YOUTH SUICIDE IN CANADA
The level of social solidarity is now lower than it was just a few decades ago. Youth are less firmly rooted
in society, and less likely to share moral standards.
FROM PERSONAL TROUBLES TO SOCIAL STRUCTURES

Social Structures: relatively stable patterns of social relations.
Three Levels of Social Structure:
1. Microstructures: patterns of intimate social relations formed during face-to-face interaction
2. Marostrutures: patters of soial relatios outside ad aoe oe’s irle of itiates and

3. Global structures: patterns of social relations outside and above the national level.
If you can see the link between your personal troubles and exterior social issues, then you are seeing
from a sociologist's perspective.
