An objective definition of deviance is used when there is a presence of a certain characteristic. Example: everyone wearing a pink hat is deviant. Specialists who learn toward the objective end of the continuum are most interested in the deviant act. There are 4 objective criteria"s that we look at individually: statistical rarity. Something is deviant if it is considered rare". There are common things that may be considered deviant. There are some rare things that are considered deviant: social harm. Causes harm to self or others: harms the functioning of society, threatens understandings of the world. Harm is subjective and varies over time: negative societal reaction. Deviant if it has a negative reaction by society"s masses . People may be treated as deviant even when the masses react positively: normative violation. Ex: absolutist social norms vs culturally specific norms. The subjective view of deviance is that there is no objective trait shared by all those who are deviant.
