Sociology
Personality characteristics, cognition, emotion and external forces like family, work,
school
Focus on how those things might effect the individual
Sociology and Drugs
Different from psychology
Endogenous (inside individual and inside factors) vs Exogenous (outside factors
and how they effect the individual and change them)
Incidence*
How particular drugs effect the person and look at outside issues and see what we
can draw from
Prevalence*
Looks at a certain population group and seeing how they use drugs (like daily use,
lifetime use etc)
General behavioural social science
Focuses on all forms of behaviour and those that are more narrow as well
Look at other disciplines as well to help them come to a conclusion
Sociological Significance
Human behaviour exists within human and social context that can’t be ignored
Sociology and Drugs
Sociological view of drugs contribute to our understanding of drugs in four important
ways:
1. Defining what is or is not a drug is more than the biochemical properties of
substance , it is a social process too
For instance alcohol
The social circumstances can result in different behaviour
