Social function of art relates to place and time. Three separate types of social context: domestic context (household, burials, most well preserved artifacts, also holds large quantities of intact artifacts, very public practice conscious of artifacts chosen for burials, temple/sanctuary, very precious artifacts sacred offerings. Pots found in burials are largely different from those found in sanctuary. Use time to describe style and style to dictate time. Relative = stylistic dating ages, artistic eras, movements. Through archeology the deeper the artifact is underground the older it is. Then within that assumption similar styles are grouped together. In order to make assumption into fact, research is piled together until a pattern emerges. Protogeometric earliest style of pottery; the(cid:374) geo(cid:373)etri(cid:272) . Absolute = accurate, numerical dating = historical date. 1st millennium bce whole course takes part across 1000years. 1050 bce start date 420 bce end date. Dating will be by century (100 years) ex.
