Process by which information is exchanged between a sender and a receiver. Sender must encode his/her thoughts in to some form that can be transmitted to the receiver. Receiver must perceive the message and accurately decode it to achieve accurate understanding. Effective communication occurs when the right people receive the right information in a timely manner. Chain of command lines of authority and formal reporting relationships: downward communication information that flows from the top of the organization to the bottom (ex. Vp to plant manager to supervisors to production workers: upward communication flows from the bottom of the organization to the top (ex. Chemical engineer discovering new formula, informs r&d, which informs vp: horizontal communication occurs between departments or functional units usually as a mean of coordinating effort (flows up to and then down from a common manager) Reality of chain of command is an incomplete and sometimes ineffective path of communication.
