Document Summary

Chapter 1: a general management perspective needs to recognize emerging opportunities and challenges, prepare a response, and ensure the success of whatever plans of action are decided upon. Recurring themes in the textbook include: values, advantages, and globalization. The person responsible for balancing these themes is the general manager. The general manager(cid:495)s job is to create value for the enterprise. The general manager is responsible for all facets of the organization internally. Leading indicators: something that signals a future event, a hint about what(cid:495)s coming. Lagging indicators (how the business is operating, etc. ) and externally (looking at the outward perspective). There are a number of different indicators that a general manager should be able to use to get a better sense of what is going on in their industry: focusing on an event that has already happened. A starting point of what they want to accomplish. Organizational vision gives direction to all employees.
