The term is also sometimes used in an evaluative sense to distinguish good filmmakers (auteurs) from bad ones. Identifying the director as the film"s author and evaluating the film as the work of an auteur has a ling history, but it became a prominent issue after the 1940s, particularly in french and english language film criticism. Artistic expression, and all you see is how _______ views the world. Auteur criticism tended to promote a study of film style: if a filmmaker was an artist like a writer or painter, that artistry was revealed not only in what was said but in how it was said. Limitations of auteur theory: you can"t just focus on the director; therefore you may miss the context.
