Book assignments 20% (due oct 16th, nov 6th, nov 27th) Puritans- people who leave england between 1620-1640 because they believed england was morally corrupt. They hoped to set up a new religious community. They wanted the community to be an example to the church back in england. Brought back from the old world the belief in witchcraft and witches. For much of the church s history, the church and witchcraft lived in harmony. In the 12th century the church takes a hard stand against weeding out witches and witchcraft. Prior to the 15th and 16th century witches were regarded as evil but were not yet seen as a threat to christianity. The witches eventually became and organized threat to the church in the 15th and 16th century. Between 1450 and 1750 between 50,000 and 9,000,000 people were put to death for having performed witchcraft . Top minds such as isaac newton and john locke believed in witchcraft.
