Pirate Terms and Themes
-There are opposing beliefs that pirates were good and bad, some experts say they were rebelling
against cruelty, while some say they were simply thieves
Privateer- An individual hired by the government to attack and steal from ships from enemy nations
Letter of Marque-The privateer’s contract with the government
Buccaneers-French, English, or Dutch raiders who preyed on Spanish ships in the 1600’s, usually in the
Caribbean
Filibuster-The French word for Buccaneer
Swashbuckler-1900’s term for pirates in literature and film
Pirate-someone who robs from others at sea and acts beyond the law
Ancient Pirates

-Based in Turkey
-In 1340 BCE they raided Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean Sea
-Not much information on this group, as they were one of the first instances of Piracy
2.Sea Peoples
-1220-1186 BCE
-Made up of approx. 6 tribes
-Would attack while in groups of up to thousands
-Attacked many areas in the Mediterranean and near Egypt
-One of the strongest Pirate forces ever,
-Defeated by the Egyptians in a great battle in 1186 BCE
3.Cilician Pirates
-Roman Republic lasted from 509-27 BCE
-In 190 BCE the Romans attacked the Seleucid Empire
-This later led to the growth of the Cilician Pirates in 133-67 BCE
-This group was a big threat to Rome and eventually became such a threat they kidnapped Julius Ceaser
