Religion as Symbolic Practice
Having noted the importance of historical context, our worldview
is often shaped by historical narratives in everyday life. If asked,
what is the largest religion in the world today? Your knowledge
about this topic would depend on where you lived, your own
interest in the topic and where and when, for example, you were
educated and how you learn about the world, that is, what media
sources you turn to for information. These facets together shape
your unique reality while simultaneously creating opportunities
for shared meanings with others.
Lavenda and Schultz (2012) define religion as “ideals and
practices that postulate reality beyond that which is immediately
available to the senses” (300). In this way, religion influences
one’s behaviours and beliefs as well as how they interact with
others. Lavenda and Schultz use A.F.C. Wallace’s work to outline
the perceived behaviours associated with religions. These
