Introduction to the language and organization of anatomy: When discussing anatomy the use of proper terms that are concise, consistent and unambiguous are important. For example using the word near can mean numerous directions, whereas proximal is precise. This first section introduces the terminology in relation to regions, cavities, planes and directions. After reading this section should be able to describe the location of structures in anatomical terms. When starting to study anatomy, anatomical position is reference. This is when the participant is standing erect facing the observer with the feet flat on the floor and parallel, upper extremities are to their sides, with palms directed towards the observer. When the subject is lying, on their back, in anatomical position this is described as supine; when lying face down this is called prone.
