Why Health, Why Now?
-Choosing healthy behaviours now will provide immediate benefits!
-Choosing health now will help bring long-term rewards !
-Health problems can create impediments in life but if you improve your health, it
can lead to improving academic performance, career success, better relationships
and more joy in living !
What is health?
-Is health just the absence of disease?!
-Is health being in good physical shape and being able to resist illness !
-The medical model views health status as focused on the individual and a biological
or disease organ perspective !
-The individual issues !
-The public health model views health as a result of the individuals interactions with
the social and physical environment !
-Society, country, community or cross country !
-Canada didn’t have public health until 2004!
Health, Wellness and Illness
-Health: positive concept emphasizing social and peronal resources, as well as
physical capabilities—World Health Organization!
-1948 definition changed in 1986 !
-The dierence was that in 1986 was community based whereas the 1948 one was
individualized !
-In 1986 they added socioeconomic status being higher means better health !
-Wellness: the way a person feels about his or her health and quality of life !
-Someones perception of how they feel !
