Dada: 1915 - 1922, international avant-garde movement. Military term meaning the first line of troops in a battle. Used to refer to art/literary movements as those who clear the way for those who follow them: historical context: the great war. Paradox of the first world war, the first really industrialized war. Wwi was the first war where troops returned home as social pariahs opposed to the heroes that were welcomed back in other wars: the cabaret voltaire. Not an appealing place, but people would come together to do poetry readings. Poetry bordering on the irrational, led to radical experimentation in new ways of expression: the spirit of revolt. Revolt of the first world war: dada . Everything and nothing, sounds like gibberish, random word picked from dictionary: tristan tzara: the guru of dada. As though the unconscious was speaking with no filter, this was a feat sought after.
