Description
Mohammed Usman Farooqi Tyler Wunder PP-111 April 28, 2013 Change in Paradigm's "A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline." I believe today's definition of "paradigm" represents a model that many people follow or acknowledge that does not constrain to one field. Whereas Thomas Kuhn's definition seems to be limited just in the field of science and progression. In today's society the phrase "paradigm shift" is becoming more apparent in vagueness in terms of broader fields. Throughout this essay I will be using examples of how the phrase is used openly in the business world and I will compare it to the original meaning. Using examples of today's perspective of the phrase "paradigm shift" and contrasting that to Thomas Kuhn's I will prove that the popular use of the phrase has distorted the original meaning for the purpose of using it in a broad perspective. Nobody denies, that Thomas Kuhn's original meaning of paradigm meant scientific progression not just advancing, but leaving behind or dismissing the other theory or paradigm. Today the popular use of the phrase "paradigm shift" is used in many aspects in the real world such as business. For instance, internet has been implemented and has driven many aspects of change. Comparing to Kuhn's original meaning of a paradigm as a scientific revolution it differs in the sense that the business world incorporated internet while keeping other means of technology. For instance, just because internet was a paradigm shift, does not mean we abandoned other sorts of technology such as phones. An example of a paradigm shift in Kuhn's meaning is the Sun and the Earth. Kuhn believed that this was a paradigm shift, due to the scientific nature. People once believed that the Sun revolved around the Earth, now we know that the Earth revolves around the sun. This causes a total new outlook while totally leaving behind the old theory. This is slightly different, from the way the phrase is used today due to this example being specifically scientific. As well, this shows the immediate disregard of all other theories prior to the paradigm model currently. Finally, the last example of paradigm shifts I will give is in the broad field of industrialization. Back in the time of the pioneers they had to manually hunt and gather there food, later they learned how to far
