Document Summary

Hegel believes human beings desire recognition, that is, they desire to be recognized for something other than nature. Ultimately we desire recognition as free beings who, through our capacity for consciousness, have transcended or rise above the pure necessity or nature. What does it mean to learn to be free. Hegel regards the example where two individuals stake their lives, n the end the winner becomes the master the loser becomes a slave. The master then would receive recognition of being a free individual and is allowed the essence of life, while the slave would be giving him that recognition. However the problem that arises here is that the recognition from the slave is not satisfactory. The recognition is coming from one"s fear of death, and not from an equal and free being. Picture painted by hagel offers us a different approach for peace.
